History
The company’s origins started in Ladybank in 1947 when agriculture was in the beginning of a mechanised revolution. Company founder Mr Gavin R Reekie OBE formed Farm Mechanisation Ltd, affectionately known as “The Mech” to market the innovative TE20 Ferguson tractor with the revolutionary hydraulic 3-point linkage. In those early days horses were still the main power source on the farm and tractors were for “softies”.In an early letter to Mr Reekie in 1949 a farmer wrote. “I am using horses everyday and I know by experience that from years end to years end, two good men with pairs of good horses will more than hold their own with a tractor and do better work by a long bit”. Today’s farmer may have a different take on that point of view.
In 1950 Stirling Tractors was established at St. Ninians in Stirling. In those days a Singer car franchise operated along side the agricultural section. A move to Cupar in 1954 coincided with the Dunfermline depot of Farm Mechanisation.
1960 saw the formation of Reekie Plant Ltd at Cupar and Stirling to develop construction and earthmoving equipment. That same year Reekie Motors was formed in Cupar as a specialist car operation.
1964 the company extended into grain handling with Reekie Mechanical Handling, installing malt kilns, storage silos and conveying systems. The main base for Reekie Plant was established in Glasgow to sell Komatsu earthmoving equipment.
1972 Reekie Mechanical Handling were awarded the Toyota forklift franchise having sold Komatsu forklifts for 8 years.
1975 a fire burnt out Stirling Tractors depot at Muirpark, Bannockburn where they had moved from St Ninians.
1976 a small branch was located at Forres to cater for forklifts and construction equipment.
1980 a change of franchise from Toyota to Komatsu forklifts came about.
1985 a small unit was acquired in Coldstream to cater for Reekie Plant customers in the Borders.
1991 The MF Dealership, part of the business of Edwards Engineering was purchased and taken over by Farm Mechanisation.
1993 Reekie began to promote the MF brand in the Lothian Area.
1994 after 24 years the company relinquished the Komatsu earthmoving franchise in Scotland. Reekie Perth was established in Inveralmond Ind Estate Perth.
1995 The company Chairman Mr G R Reekie OBE retired.
2002 in September the Cupar branch moved form the established home of South Road to new premises on the eastern gateway at Cupar Industrial Estate.
2004 Mr Gavin J Reekie retired from the company.
2009 Alistair Reekie, third generation, joins Company as an Area Sales Manager.
2011 The Founder Mr Gavin Ralston Reekie dies at the age of 95.
Through all the intervening years the Reekie name has been synonymous with enterprise and innovation. In the early years they manufactured a 4-row seeder, a potato harvester and enclosed tractor cab. Early pioneering work also saw them assist in breaking the bed of the River Forth helping to excavate for the bridge pillars with a “Dinkum Digger” and a single tooth bucket called a “Reekie Ripper”.
